The whole business of learning about personal finance is still quite a new learning discipline in the United Kingdom. Even so, there is already quite a catalogue of learning resources, some published commercially, some developed from a range of working partnerships and some created by tutors on their home computers!
To help adult learning practitioners find their way through all these options, in 2004 the Basic Skills Agency commissioned a review of available resources for Financial Literacy. The aim was to produce a guide that would provide basic information about each resource along with an indication of topics covered and skill levels addressed.
To indicate content, resources were mapped against the nine subject areas of the Adult Financial Capability Framework and the three skill levels of Financial Capability in that Framework.
Recognising that financial subject matter plays an important part in the teaching work of many Essential Skills Tutors, each resource was mapped against the skill levels and topics of the Adult Literacy Curriculum and the Adult Numeracy Curriculum (links?)
This website has been created by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) (www.niace.org.uk) and the Financial Literacy Team at the Basic Skills Agency (www.money-bsa.org.uk) and it now turns that original paper report into a searchable database. The content has also been updated and there is a facility for practitioners and publishers to submit new resources to be included (link?). Users can also provide feedback on their experiences using the materials (link?)
In doing this we are following the path of the original document so neither NIACE nor the Basic Skills Agency are seeking to make value judgements about the materials. We are merely indicating factual details about the content. We have provided a facility for users to contribute their comments on the use of the materials and we hope that many users will make use of this. However, we cannot accept any responsibility for the content of these user comments.
